A Sainsbury’s branch has temporarily halted the use of facial recognition technology after a customer was incorrectly flagged as a thief and removed from the premises. The supermarket chain attributed the incident to a human mistake rather than a flaw in the AI system, which was developed by Facewatch.
Matt Arnold, a 46-year-old shopper, described the experience as deeply distressing. “I was embarrassed, mortified even, and felt quite humiliated and powerless,” he said, recalling the moment he was confronted by staff and asked to leave the store.
The incident occurred at a Sainsbury’s location where the company had been testing AI-powered security cameras designed to identify known shoplifters. However, the system misidentified Arnold, leading to his ejection. Sainsbury’s has since paused the use of the technology at that store while it reviews its procedures.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s expressed regret over the incident, clarifying that the error was made by a staff member who misinterpreted the system’s alerts. The company emphasized that Facewatch’s technology functioned as intended, and the fault lay in the human response to its output.
Arnold, who was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, criticized the lack of checks in the system. He argued that the reliance on automated alerts without proper verification can lead to unjust outcomes, calling for stricter safeguards.
The case has reignited debates about the use of facial recognition in retail settings, with privacy advocates warning against such surveillance. Sainsbury’s, meanwhile, has stated that it will conduct a thorough investigation before deciding whether to reinstate the technology at the affected store.
